I have compiled a new article for a special – Fibromyalgia-focused issue of the January/February 2017 issue of MASSAGE & BODYWORK. Entitled “How Breath Can Impact Your Client’s Fibromyalgia Pain.” Here is a brief sample:

There is a wealth of evidence that points to a significant connection between chronic conditions – fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic pelvic pain – and breathing pattern disorders (BPD). BPD is also commonly described as overbreathing, upper chest breathing, and, in extreme examples, hyperventilation.

It is important to clarify that the connections between BPD and fibromyalgia (and the other chronic pain-related conditions), are not causal. That is to say that BPD does not necessarily cause the symptoms of fibromyalgia, but frequently aggravates and maintains them. Because the vast majority of people with a diagnosis of fibromyalgia can be shown to display profound BPD, many of their major symptoms may be improved, and sometimes eliminated, by better breathing habits.

The influence on breathing poorly and pain is profound – and I hope you enjoy the article !!
