As editor-in-chief of JBMT it’s always of major interest to me to see a summary of what readers are downloading….what the leading current interests are.
A breakdown of the top 25 articles (see full list below), during this July-September 2012 period, shows a number of continuing trends among those who subscribe to the journal, as well as the number of times these particular articles are cited by others in their own writings.

- The fascination with core stability and Pilates methodology continues – although the leading download, and the most cited article, continues to be the controversial paper by Eyal Lederman DO PhD – on what he terms ‘the myth of core stability.’
- Numbers 6, 7 and14 on the list focus variously on Pilates and non-structural scoliosis; low back pain, and body composition.
- The theme of movement therapies in health-care continues with #2 on the list – a paper from the Tiffany Fields and her colleagues at the Touch Research Institute, University of Miami – on the effects of yoga and massage therapy in reducing prenatal depression and prematurity.
- Rehabilitation from stroke – and the possibilities of motor relearning via movement therapies – are the themes of #3 (hand rehabilitation) and #4 (neural re-organisation); and also #10, which evaluates management of gait, post-stroke.
- Passive treatment approaches emerge as being of interest in #5 (manipulation and the SI joint) and #8 (abdominal massage and chronic constipation)
- Number 9 is massive review, offering evidence-based clinical practice guidelines on therapeutic massage and chronic neck-pain
- Myths reappear in #11 in which regular contributor and Associate editor, Craig Liebenson DC evaluates ‘musculoskeletal myths’
- JBMTs reader interest in mind-body issues is reflected in #12 which focuses on anorexia nervosa, from a Scandinavian physiotherapy perspective
- Number 13 focuses on assessment of cervical dysfunction, by Greek contributor, Dr. Nikolaos Strimpakos
- Low back pain is the area of interest in #15 (flexibility exercise effect on the lumbar angle) and #22 (‘what to do with sciatica?’)
- Fascial research and clinical approaches feature in a number of articles on the list – several by Italian clinician/researcher Paolo Tozzi DO. For example numbers 18 (low back pain and kidney mobility), 21(fascia in manual therapy), 23 (review of fascia research), 24 (clinical experience and the fascial model), 25 (fascial release effects on cervical and lumbar pain)
- The long-term effects of stretching on jump performance and range of motion is the focus of #16
- The use effects of occlusal splints on sleep bruxers – as measured by EMG of masseter and temporalis muscles is evaluated in #17
- Number 19 on the list offers a systematic review of manual therapies and myofascial trigger points by Spanish researchers, led by Cesar Fernandez de las Penas PhD DO
- Balance training and postural control are the subject of #20 – a paper from Brazil.
What do I take from this eclectic mix of topics?
- That movement therapies are of major interest – as are passive modalities – whether involving massage, manipulation or any of a variety of fascia-related methods.
- That myths (or at least controversies) remain – both in movement and passve approaches!
- That JBMT is drawing submissions from world-wide sources. Those represented in this list derive from Brazil, Canada, Greece, India, Italy, Israel, Norway, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, UK, and the USA
